  • Summer Deadlines (May - August)

    Fulbright Specialist Program

    Deadline: Ongoing (reviews applications every 8 weeks)

    The program awards grants to U.S. faculty and professionals approved to join the Specialist Roster in select disciplines to engage in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide. Shorter grant lengths give Specialists greater flexibility to pursue projects that work best with their current academic or professional commitments.

    Hagley Museum & Library Henry Belin du Pont Research Grants

    Deadline: March 31, June 30, October 31

    These grants are intended to support serious scholarly work that makes use of Hagley's research collections and expands on prior scholarship. Application materials should explain the research project's focus, methodology, engagement with existing scholarship, and the intended product, as well as Hagley collection(s) to be used during the proposed grant residency. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to consult with Hagley staff prior to submitting their application.

    Hagley Museum & Library Exploratory Research Grant

    Deadline: March 31, June 30, October 31

    These grants support one-week visits by scholars who believe that their project will benefit from Hagley research collections, but need the opportunity to explore them on-site to determine if a Henry Belin du Pont research grant application is warranted. Priority will be given to junior scholars with innovative projects that seek to expand on existing scholarship. Proposals must demonstrate which Hagley collections might be pertinent to the project.

    Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowships

    Deadline: May 1

    Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowships support the writing-up of already completed research. The fellowship is awarded to scholars in the earlier stages of their careers, when they frequently lack the time and resources to develop their research for publication.  Scholars with a Ph.D. in hand for no more than ten years are eligible to apply. By providing funds for scholars to devote themselves full-time to writing, the Foundation aims to enable a new generation of scholars to publish significant works that will impact the development of anthropology.

    Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowships in Ethnographic Film

    Deadline: May 1

    Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowships in Ethnographic Film support the completion of ethnographic film/s based on anthropological research already accomplished by the applicant. Fellowships are awarded to scholars in the earlier stages of their careers, when they frequently lack the time and resources to develop their research in the form of ethnographic film. Scholars who have received a Ph.D. or equivalent within ten years of the application deadline are eligible to apply. A maximum of two Fejos Fellowships are awarded annually.

    University of California-Irvine Prize Gregory Kavka in Political Philosophy

    Deadline: May 30

    The Gregory Kavka/UCI Prize in Political Philosophy is awarded every other year in odd years to the author of a paper in a refereed journal, an original book chapter, or an original essay published in a collection with a multiplicity of contributors, from any area of political philosophy and political theory.

    Western Literature Association Don D. Walker Prize

    Deadline: June 1

    The Don D. Walker Prize is given annually to the best essay published on western American literature during the previous calendar year (for example, the 2014 winner will have published an essay in 2013). “Western” in this context is defined broadly and refers to all of North America that historically or critically has been considered “West” as well as to comparative studies of the American West that cross regional or national boundaries.

    The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Short-Term Fellowships

    Deadline: July 30

    With more than 500 fellowships awarded since 1994, the Gilder Lehrman Institute offers short-term research fellowships to doctoral candidates, postdoctoral scholars, college and university faculty at every rank, and independent scholars working in American history. In 2014, up to ten fellowships of $3,000 each will be awarded to scholars to conduct research within the archival holdings of any institution in the five boroughs of New York City.

    Center for Advanced Study Sofia Advanced Academia Fellowship Programme for International Scholars

    Western Literature Association Susan J. Rosowski Award

    Deadline: Award will not be given in 2021. 

    The Western Literature Association welcomes nominations of outstanding teachers and mentors in the field of western American literature. Candidates can be nominated by students or colleagues with a letter of support addressed to the award decision committee; candidates can also self-nominate. Once nominated, the candidate will be notified and invited to submit supporting materials. The candidate stays in the pool of nominees for two cycles.

    National Endowment for the Humanities Digital Projects for the Public

    Deadline: June 9

    The Digital Projects for the Public program supports projects such as websites, mobile applications, games, and virtual environments that significantly contribute to the public’s engagement with humanities ideas. Projects must be analytical and deeply grounded in humanities scholarship in a discipline such as history, religion, anthropology, jurisprudence, or art history.

    European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme

    The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 10-month residencies in one of the 16 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Budapest, Cambridge, Delmenhorst, Edinburgh, Freiburg, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar, Zürich.     Western Literature Association Thomas J. Lyon Book Award in Western American Literary and Cultural Studies

    Forty-nine years after the founding of the Western Literature Association and Western American Literature, scholarship of the literary West is thriving in both quantity and quality. To honor outstanding, single-author scholarly books on the literature and culture of the American West, the Western Literature Association seeks nominations for the annual Thomas J. Lyon Book Award.     National Gallery of Art A.W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellowship

    Graduate Curatorial Internships at the National Gallery of Art provide in-depth training for advanced Ph.D. students and recent Ph.D. recipients interested in gaining curatorial experience in a museum setting. Graduate curatorial interns work with curators on permanent collection or exhibition projects and attend a weekly museum seminar that introduces Gallery staff, departments, programs, and functions.

    National Gallery of Art Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts

    CASVA, founded in 1979 and located in the National Gallery’s East Building, is a research institute that fosters study of the production, use, and cultural meaning of art, artifacts, architecture, urbanism, photography, and film worldwide from prehistoric times to the present. CASVA’s programs include fellowshipsmeetingsresearch, and publications. These are privately funded through endowments and grants to the National Gallery of Art. During the 2017 ‒ 2018 academic year, CASVA published The Artist in Edo and Reflections on the Collection: The Edmond J. Safra Visiting Professors at the National Gallery of Artand produced the sixty-seventh A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts as audio and video presentations. Members for the 2018 – 2019 academic year include approximately 40 fellows from around the globe.

    Library of Congress Kluge Foundation Fellowship

    The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research at the Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months. Established in 2000 through an endowment of $60 million from John W. Kluge, the Center is located in the splendid Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.

    Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

    Deadline: September 15

    The Fulbright Core Scholar Program supports activities and projects that recognize and promote the critical relationship between educational exchange and international understanding, in addition to the intellectual merit of the proposals. Applications with broad multiplier effects are particularly welcome, as are projects that are conducive to candidates’ sharing of their experiences and knowledge with colleagues, students and, ideally, with the general public in their host country and, upon return, in the United States.

    National Endowment for the Humanities Documenting Endangered Languages

    The Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) program is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of an estimated half of the 6000-7000 currently used languages, this effort aims also to exploit advances in information technology.

    The Graham Foundation Individual Grants

    The Graham Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015 Grants to Individuals. Since 1956, the Graham Foundation has provided direct funding to individuals to produce publications, exhibitions, films, research, and other projects that foster the development and exchange of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society. As one of the few funders of individuals working on projects about architecture, the foundation’s grants provide important support for architects, artists, curators, designers, scholars, writers, and other individuals.     American Council of Learned Societies Fellowships and Grants

    National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends

    Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources. Summer Stipends support continuous full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months. Each National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend provides $6,000 for two consecutive, uninterrupted months of full-time independent study and research.

    The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers supports projects that draw on the research collections at The New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.     The Society of Architectural Historians Edilia and François-Auguste de Montêquin Fellowship

    *Due to travel restrictions, the Edilia and François-Auguste de Montêquin Fellowship has been temporarily suspended until further notice 

    This fellowship is intended to support the research of junior scholars (usually scholars engaged in doctoral dissertation research) annually, and senior scholars (scholars who have completed their Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree) every other year in even-numbered years - 2014, 2016, 2018, etc. The research to be supported must focus on Spanish, Portuguese, or Ibero-American architecture, including colonial architecture produced by the Spaniards in the Philippines and what is today the United States.

    The Society of Architectural Historians H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship

    *Due to travel restrictions, the H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship has been temporarily suspended until further notice

    The Society of Architectural Historians’ prestigious H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship will be offered for 2014 and will allow a recent graduate or emerging scholar to study by travel for one year. The fellowship is not for the purpose of doing research for an advanced academic degree. Instead, Prof. Brooks intended the recipient to study by travel and contemplation while observing, reading, writing, or sketching.

    American Philosophical Society Franklin Research Grants

    Deadline: October 1; December 1

    The Franklin program is particularly designed to help meet the costs of travel to libraries and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or equivalent research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or laboratory research expenses. Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research. They are not intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of publication.

    The Louisville Institute Project Grant for Researchers

    The Louisville Institute’s Project Grant for Researchers Program supports research, reflection, and writing by academics and pastors concerning Christian faith and life, the practice of ministry, and/or religious institutions.     Cornell University Society for the Humanities Fellowships

    The focal theme for 2016-2017 is “SKIN.” Six to eight Fellows will be appointed. Selected Fellows will collaborate with the Director of the Society for the Humanities, Timothy Murray, Professor of Comparative Literature and English and Curator of the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, an international research center on new media.

    The Getty Foundation Scholar Grants

    Getty Scholar grants are for established scholars, or writers who have attained distinction in their fields. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute, where they pursue their own projects free from academic obligations, make use of Getty collections, join their colleagues in a weekly meeting devoted to an annual theme, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.

    Stanford University Humanities Center External Faculty Fellowships

    The American Academy in Berlin: The Berlin Prize

    Deadline: September 25

    The American Academy in Berlin is a private, independent, nonprofit institute for advanced study located in Berlin, Germany. Its fellowship program promotes advanced research in a variety of academic, cultural, and political disciplines. The Academy’s public outreach, which facilitates the introduction of a fellow's work to a wider audience, serves its mission of fostering transatlantic ties through cultural exchange. Fellowships are typically awarded for an academic semester or, in some cases, for an entire academic year. Candidates in academic disciplines are expected to have completed a doctorate at the time of application.

    University of Chicago Harper & Schmidt Fellowship

    The Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts at the University of Chicago is an interdisciplinary organization of both senior and junior fellows, dedicated to promoting liberal arts teaching and scholarship. Harper-Schmidt Fellows at the University of Chicago teach in the College's core courses in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Western Civilization.

    The Getty Foundation Library Research Grants

    *The 2021-2022 cycle has been canceled in order to accommodate the 2020-2021 Library Research Grant recipients whose visits were deferred due to COVID-1

    Getty Library Research Grants provide partial, short-term support for costs relating to travel and living expenses to scholars whose research requires use of specific collections housed in the Getty Research Institute. A Library Research Grant is not a prerequisite for obtaining access to the Research Library.

    The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Fellowship

    The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute combines a public art museum with a complex of research and academic programs, including a major art history library. Fellowships are awarded every year to established and promising scholars with the aim of fostering a critical commitment to inquiry in the theory, history, and interpretation of art and visual culture. As part of our commitment to fostering diverse engagements with the visual arts, RAP particularly seeks to elevate constituencies, subjects, and methods that have historically been underrepresented in the discipline.     Villa I Tatti Fellowship

    American Antiquarian Society Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship

    Deadline: October 15

    Scholars who are no more than three years beyond receipt of the doctorate are eligible to apply for a special year-long residential fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society to revise their dissertation for publication. Established as the Mellon Post-Dissertation Fellowship in 1998, the fellowship has been renamed in honor of John B. Hench, who retired in August 2007 as vice president for collections and programs after thirty-three years on the staff of the American Antiquarian Society.

    Harvard Divinity School Women’s Studies in Religion Research & Visiting Faculty Position

    Each year Harvard Divinity School selects five candidates for full-time Research Associate and Visiting Faculty positions in its Women's Studies in Religion Program.     Saint Louis University Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies NEH Research Fellowships

    The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies awards NEH Research Fellowships of five, ten, or fifteen-week duration to scholars who can make use of the rich and varied resources available at Saint Louis University. These include the Vatican Film Library as well as the manuscript, rare book, and general collections of Pius XII Library. The Vatican Film Library holds extensive portions of the Vatican Library’s Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts on microfilm. In addition, it has one of the largest collections of microfilmed Jesuit historical documents from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

    David B. Larson Fellowship in Health and Spirituality
